Understanding Water Baptism
Baptism is the normal and scriptural thing to do once a person has decided to follow Jesus. It is the Lord's command! (Matthew 28:19) The Bible teaches that not only are we to believe and repent, but we also need to be baptized (Acts 2:38).
Baptism holds profound meaning for the believer:
- It portrays the union of the believer with Christ in his death, burial and resurrection (Romans 6:1-11).
- It pictures a new, converted life in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- It pictures our faith in Jesus Christ to resurrect us from the dead when He returns.
- It is an outward sign and testimony of our receiving him as Lord and Savior. (Acts 8:26-39)
Remember, our Savior was sinless, yet He was baptized as our example (Matt. 3:13-17).
The word translated into English as baptism is from the Greek word baptizo, meaning "to dip into" or "immerse." Your baptism will be by immersion in water. You will receive instructions on the proper attire and other information you will need for this event.
Since baptism is also a time of celebration, we encourage you to invite your friends and family to witness this powerful testimony.
We hope your preparation for this sacred ordinance will be that of a renewed heart and mind that is committed to "observing all things" he has commanded.
